At the latest meeting of Lapwings WI, guest speaker, local magistrate Mr Bob Gow treated members to a very informative and interesting insight into the history of the bench and the work of a magistrate.
This included the selection process, the kinds of crimes dealt with in a magistrate’s court and sentencing.
Members then took part in a mock trial, enacting roles such as Chair of the bench, prosecutor and defending solicitor. The defendant was eventually found not guilty of shoplifting!
There was a sale of whodunnit and detective books donated by members to raise funds for Lapwings WI.
Skills in knitting and crochet, along with some lovely examples, were shared as members are making poppies for the WW1 commemorations on 4th August. The “Lights out” event taking place on 4th August was also discussed, when everyone in the UK is encouraged to turn off their lights between 10pm and 11pm, leaving just a single light or candle as a symbolic act of reflection and hope.
The next meeting of Lapwings WI will be a visit to Beauvale Priory for a tour and talk about the Priory followed by a cream tea.
Lapwings WI membership continues to grow and new members are most welcome.
