A ‘much-needed’ Hucknall community facility is continuing to provide its invaluable service despite recent cuts in its budget and is even hoping to extend its provision further.
St John’s Day Centre currently opens from 10am-3pm every Friday at St John’s community hall providing a range of activities for up to 35 people.
The Nottingham Road based group runs a day centre for Dispatch district residents who feel isolated, infirm or lonely.
“We are a registered charity and with the recent round of cuts, continue to provide an essential service for our members,” said manager Andrea Smith. “We run entirely on grants and donations with only a token amount from the council.”
“Unusually, we have about five spare places and would love to reach as many of the local elderly as possible and are also trying to arrange a further Tuesday afternoon session.”
The group provides transport for those who need extra support through disabilities or difficulties either through a wheelchair accessible mini-bus or a taxi service.
“We believe we are the only group in Hucknall that provide transport for the members who would otherwise be completely housebound and isolated in the community,” added Andrea.
During the Friday event which costs uptp £10 for the day including transport, members gather in the morning for tea and a chat over the old newspaper talking of times gone by before enjoying a two course lunch cooked on site before an afternoon of entertainment.
“We invite singers, groups, magicians and choirs to entertain and everyone enjoys what is on offer,” added Andrea. “We also have visiting members of Churches Together who provide communion for those who want it every four-six weeks.
“The group are invited to go on at least two trips a year too. In the past we have been on a cruise along the River Trent and are looking forward to watching a film provided by the Byron Community Project in the coming weeks.
“We would love to see more people at our Friday sessions and hopefully by extending to Tuesdays as well we can meet the needs of more people within the community.”
