Police are investigating after a woman gave birth to a baby boy in a Shirebrook warehouse on New Year’s Day before abandoning it.

Staff at the Sports Direct Warehouse, contacted Chad to say that the woman, believed to be of Eastern European origin, gave birth in the toilets at the Brook Park East site.

It is not known who discovered the infant or how the mother was identified but paramedics were called who then contacted police.

The baby boy was taken to King’s Mill Hospital before being transferred to a specialist neo-natal unit in Leicester, police said.

Police told Chad that the mother, a woman in her 20s, had also received hospital treatment.
