Newstead tree not up to scratch

A member of Newstead Parish Council has claimed that the village’s festive tree last Christmas left a lot to be desired.

At a meeting of the council this week, Coun Anne Halliwell said that when the tree, in front of Newstead Miners Welfare Community Centre, was first decorated, it looked ‘terrible’.

She added that lights had been put on the tree in a haphazard fashion and parts of the tree were unlit.

Civic trees were decorated by Gedling Borough Council all over their district last Christmas and the demand for lights exceeded expectations.

A spokesman said this meant that decoration of Newstead’s tree did not at first come up to scratch, although the lighting was improved at a later stage.

Also at the meeting and after well over 20 years as a member of the parish council, Coun Wendy Evans resigned through family commitments.

Members expressed their thanks and passed on their best wishes on behalf of the community to Wendy and sent her a signed card plus a gift of gardening vouchers as momento for her commitment to the village.
