Kind-hearted customers of a South Normanton supermarket proved that pennies make pounds by raising £1,000 for a local teenager.

Fourteen-year-old Skye Newton is among 30 youngsters from five Bolsover district schools who are busily raising funds to take part in a humanitarian expedition to South West Africa in July.

A student at Frederick Gent School, Skye had already earned nearly £2,500 – smashing the £1,500 target set for each participant by organisers NHS Hardwick Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Derbyshire County Council.
