It sounds like a cliche, but when Hucknall’s Oasis Hair and Beauty Salon says it is a cut above the rest, it really is.
For the Wighay Road business has just been voted as the Dispatch Salon of the Year.
It’s a great achievement for the business, which Alison Madge only took over two and a half years ago.
“I’m amazed,” she said. “Amazed to think that we have only been here for a short time and we have come out on top.”
Alison had been a mobile hairdresser and was looking to buy a business when she noticed the Oasis salon was up for sale.
Her daughter Becky (21) is also a hairdresser and as the shop is quite close to where the family lives, it made sense to buy it.
She started with just three members of the team but now the salon employs eight people, includig Becky, and can cater for all hairdressing requests, to suit younger people or older folk.
Alison added: “We have a great team here. They help each other out when they need to and there’s a really good atmosphere. It’s a clean environment and we are really friendly, offering people a cup of coffee and a chat when they come in.”
One regular customer is 69-year-old Christine Fowler. She told the Dispatch: “It’s a very good place to come and have your done as they do what you ask for.
“They can do fancy but if you just want a plain and simple cut, that’s what they do.”
The Dispatch launched the Salon of the Year competition to help find the area’s best crimpers and permers. People were asked to nominate and vote on their favourite places.
The Oasis salon has a website www.oasishairandbeauty.com and can be contacted on 0115 9523281.
