Road chaos expected in Hucknall as major bridge repairs get underway

The 140-year-old bridge on Station Road is being rebuilt as part of Network Rail’s Railway Upgrade Plan in Nottinghamshire.

The road, which is used by more than 9,000 vehicles a day, will be closed to traffic from this Saturday,June 4 until Sunday, October 30.

The road surface will be replaced and the structure itself strengthened, although rail services under the bridge will only be impacted during the August bank holiday week.

While the road is closed to road traffic, engineers will be able to move gas, water and broadband supplies from the existing bridge to the new one.

Pedestrian access over the railway will be maintained throughout with a temporary footbridge alongside Station Road. The footbridge taking passengers directly from Hucknall station to the bridge will be unavailable during the work but the station can still be reached by using the entrance on Baths Lane.

Rob McIntosh, route managing director for Network Rail, said: “I would like to thank the people of Hucknall for their patience while this important upgrade takes place and assure them that every measure has been taken to keep any inconvenience caused to a minimum. Station Road bridge is a vital transport link for the people of Hucknall and this investment will help further improve its reliability. This work forms part of our Railway Upgrade Plan that will deliver a better railway for people, businesses and communities in the East Midlands.”

Diversionary routes have been agreed and will be clearly signposted, with different routes available for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes and for vehicles under 7.5 tonnes.
