Southwell will play joint host to the nation’s cathedrals at the annual three day Dean’s Conference for the first time on Monday.

The Minster shares the honour with Derby Cathedral and their Dean, the Very Revd John Davies. The conference is entitled: Cathedrals in the Public Square, which relates to the Public Authorities, following last year’s theme of Church and State.

Forty-two cathedrals will be represented by Deans from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The highlight will be the visit of Dr John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, to Choral Evensong in the Minster at 5.45pm on Tuesday,

A walking tour of Derby and an informal curry supper with civic guests at Normanton are amongst the activities planned for Monday.

On Tuesday a visit to County Hall with a reception by Nottinghamshire County Council and presentation by Chief Executive Mick Burrows, and a tour of the new diocesan offices in Southwell (Jubilee House) will be followed by a supper attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire and his wife - Sir John and Lady Peace - and other guests.

A lecture by The Revd Canon Simon Oliver, Canon Theologian at Southwell and Associate Professor at Nottingham University is also on the agenda for the 42 delgates, with an optional tour of the Minster and a preview of the Archbishop’s Palace, which is currently being renovated.

The joint choirs of Southwell & Derby will perform a Sung Eucharist in Derby Cathedral on Weds 30th, following a morning reflection by the Rt Revd Dr Alistair Redfern, Bishop of Derby in St Peter’s, Edensor, and an afternoon tour of the Chatsworth Estate. The Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire and his wife will be guests at a Gala Dinner in Derby, which will bring the conference to a close.
