Work started in June and the 140-year-old railway bridge was physically replaced over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Local councillors slammed Nottinghamshire County Council for a diversion route which sent lorries travelling through Bestwood Village and Moor Bridge where there is already a congestion problem.

Councillors Ben Bradley and Mick Murphy met with the council to try and reach a compromise, but Neil Hodgson, Nottinghamshire County Council’s service director for highways, said there was no suitable alternative route.

Suggestions to route traffic through Linby were not workable, he said, because of an environmental weight limit in the village and the problems HGVs would have turning at the Griffin’s Head junction at Papplewick.

Rob McIntosh, route managing director for Network Rail, thanked residents of Hucknall for their patience during the works.

He said: “I would like to assure them that every measure has been taken to keep any inconvenience caused to a minimum.

Station Road bridge is a vital transport link for the people of Hucknall and this investment will help further improve its reliability.”

There will be temporary three way traffic lights at the junction of Wigwam Lane, Papplewick Lane and Station Road until Friday, November 18.
