Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust has said a huge thank you to its army of volunteers.
This week has been National Volunteering Week and to celebrate, the trust held a number of events.
The trust has recently been accredited as meeting the national volunteering standard, Investing in Volunteers.
Only two other NHS organisations have achieved the standard.
To celebrate receiving the accreditation, Dean Howells, Executive Director: Nursing, Quality and Patient Experience, unveiled a plaque to show the trust’s commitment to volunteers.
He said: “We are delighted to have been awarded Investing in Volunteers accreditation; it is a testament to all of the hard work that our staff and volunteers have put in to help make the accreditation achievable.
“The last year has seen real progress with our ambition to be the most open and responsive organisation in the NHS.
“We ensure listening to and acting on feedback is at the heart of how our teams work with people.”
The trust currently has more than 400 volunteers in place and is continually striving to recruit more.
Suraj Mehan currently volunteers at Highbury Hospital, in Bulwell, on a mental health ward.
Suraj said: “I knew during my final year at University studying psychology that I wanted a career in mental health. However, I didn’t have any experience in the area and so applied for voluntary positions and was assigned to Redwood One ward at Highbury Hospital.
“The whole process was quick, easy and hassle-free, reflecting positively on NHS voluntary services and how well organised and enthusiastic staff are about their work.
“I was nervous at first because I had not been in a mental health ward before and did not know what to expect. However, I found once I started to talk and engage with the service users that my nerves soon calmed down.
“I am really enjoying my voluntary placement. The staff have been consistently accommodating in helping me with any issues. This support creates a great sense of security and I feel comfortable in expressing any problems I may have.”
