MP backs ban on circus wild animals

BULWELL Labour MP Graham Allen is among a group of politicians who have called on the government to introduce a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses.

Mr Allen took part in an extraordinary debate and subsequent vote in the House Of Commons at which MPs urged the coalition to introduce new restrictions from next July.

Victory for the motion will mean the end for lions and elephants in the big top.

Mr Allen said: “I am strongly in favour of a ban on animals in circuses and support the motion, which was tabled by backbenchers against the will of the Prime Minister.

“The Labour government pledged to implement a ban after a public consultation in which 10,000 people replied, 94% in favour of ban. I’m disappointed that the coalition has failed to follow this through.”
