THE NEW minister at the helm of Watnall Road Baptist Church in Hucknall has highlighted the town’s potential for the future — and also praised its community spirit.

THE REV STEPHEN IBBOTSON has become the first permanent minister at the church in two years.

“We’ve found it to be a really friendly town,” said Mr Ibbotson (61), who has been married to Helena (59) for 38 years.

“There is still a sense of community. The area is very pretty and attractive, and the people welcoming. I think Hucknall has real potential and has not lost its identity.”

Mr Ibbotson, who was born in south London, says that since his late teens, he has had a “calling to church work”.

His first ministry was in Peterborough from 1976 to 1991.

He then moved to Moortown in Leeds where he spent ten years until 2001.

His next move took him to Altrincham in Greater Manchester where he also spent ten years.

Mr Ibbotson says Hucknall will be his last ministry. He has two daughters — Rebecca Gibbions (33) and Anna Elias (31), who live in Southwell — and four grandchildren.

“We have a strong congregation at the church and have a role to play at the heart of Hucknall,” he added.

“We are open to anyone who would like to discuss issues of life and faith.”
