SANTA Claus would be a shadow of a man without his iconic white, bushy beard.
But for Hucknall’s answer to the man in red, Frank Streets, he is about to go under a cut-throat razor to shave off his facial hair in aid of charity.
Frank (72) is well-known as the Santa Claus who mans the grotto at the annual Christmas fair staged by Hucknall Parish Church.
He has been growing a Santa-style beard since September to deliver a special present to the church — a fundraising boost to the bid to raise £150,000 to make urgent repairs to its severely-damaged tower.
Frank, of Common Lane, has already raised more than £200 and is now looking for last-minute donations to give his appeal extra weight ahead of his beard-shave next week.
The facial fuzz will be removed at the Jackson’s barber shop on Derbyshire Lane, Hucknall at 10 am by Frank’s niece, Hayley Streets.
“When the fundraising first got off the ground, I was planning to have a cut-throat shave by Hayley,” said Frank, who has also taken on the role of Santa at schools and churches over the last four years.
“But she said my beard was too short. So this gave me the idea of growing it as part of a sponsorship effort.
“The fund in aid of the church tower is such a good cause and I am only too glad to help. Every penny counts and I am hoping to raise as much as possible.”
Anyone who would like to donate can call in at the parish church on Market Place or the rectory on Annesley Road.
