ALL EYES were on the team from Specsavers when Hucknall Rotary Club announced its latest ‘Citizen Of The Year’ accolade.

Janet Archer and husband Stephen, along with Vicki Bainbridge from the store on High Street, were invited to the Rotarians’ latest meeting.

But they didn’t have a clue what was about to unfold.

And they were left speechless when all three were handed the prestigious award, which is usually reserved for individuals.

The ‘Citizen Of The Year’ gong recognises those who have given dedicated service in support of the local community.

Since launching their franchise on High Street seven years ago, the Specsavers team have immersed themselves in Hucknall life.

From providing raffle prizes at fundraisers to giving talks at community groups, sponsoring the Dispatch’s Specsavers Goals Awards competition and organising Hucknall’s first-ever Christmas-tree festival, they have given support in many ways.

Janet said: “Thank you very much to Hucknall Rotary for all their fantastic work and support.

“I’d also like to thank the whole team at Specsavers in Hucknall. It’s due to their hard work and dedication, and the loyalty of our customers, that we have the resource, in these tough times, to invest in the future success and health of our local community.”

However the team they are not resting on their laurels and plan to continue playing a part in Hucknall’s future.

Janet added: “There’s still lots to do. We’d like to be involved in the regeneration of the town centre, give more support to our local schools and the elderly, and continue to spread the message about keeping your eyes healthy through good diet, exercise and regular eye-checks.

“Later this year, we’ll be sponsoring Hucknall’s first triathlon, plus a Young Scientist Of The Year Award at the National Church Of England Academy.”

The Rotary prize isn’t handed out every year.

The club’s president, Richard White, said: “This award is richly deserved. Everyone at Specsavers does a lot for the town and they have made a big contribution since launching the business.”
