Superstores unite to clean up River Leen

VOLUNTEERS from the Tesco and Argos stores in Bulwell grabbed their bin bags and litter-pickers to spruce up a section of the River Leen in the town as part of the Big Summer Clean.

As reported in last week’s Dispatch, Nottingham City Council is urging residents and businesses to back the initiative to help preserve Nottingham’s standing as the UK’s cleanest big city.

One of more than 100 events lined up included a clean-up of the Leen from the new Tesco superstore on Jennison Street down to the Argos store at Holborn Place. Also involved were Coun Jackie Morris (Lab), of the city council, and other council staff.

Plenty of rubbish, ranging from food wrappers and drinks cartons to cans and bottles, were collected.

Angela Bolton, neighbourhood action officer for Bulwell town centre, said: “It was a very productive afternoon and it was great to work with the businesses to improve the local area.

“I am looking forward to working with them on other projects in the future. I would also like to send a big thankyou to everone who took part.”

The Big Summer Clean is running until Wednesday August 31. Bulwell residents are encouraged to take part and report local ‘grotspots’.
