A KIND-hearted family from Hucknall are embarking on a tough schedule of fundraising in a bid to make the dreams of seriously-ill children come true.

The Sims are well-known in the town through the bravery of 16-year-old ABBIE, who has battled the spectre of a life-threatening cancerous brain tumour since the age of seven.

She has undergone three bouts of brain surgery in her young life and has now been left with the condition homonymous hemianopia, which means she is registered blind and her brain-processing speed has slowed.

As a youngster, the charity When You Wish Upon A Star arranged for Abbie to meet her favourite band, McFly, and has supported her ever since.

Now her family, mum MANDY, dad RICK, grandad BOB, sister EMMA and other supporters, are set to continue a long-running fundraising effort to raise £800 for the Nottingham-based organisation.

The money will go towards paying for a child and their carer to go on the charity’s annual magical trip to meet Santa Claus in Lapland at Christmas.

First on the horizon for the fundraisers will be the Yorkshire ‘Three Peaks Challenge’ on Saturday June 2.

It involves climbing Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough — three iconic landmarks in the Yorkshire Dales.

Next on the agenda is an attempt to climb Scafell Pike — the highest mountain in England — in Cumbria on Saturday August 25.

Then all eyes are on Mandy, who will line-up for the Great North Run in Newcastle on Sunday September 16.

Mandy said: “Please help us to raise vital funds to enable this wonderful charity to continue to make wonderful memories for children.”
