A TEENAGER from Hucknall has been arrested as a suspect in the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl.
The 19-year-old man, who has not been named, has been quizzed by detectives after an attack on the child on Maws Lane, Kimberley.
The young victim, who is from Ilkeston and also cannot be identified, has told police she was assaulted by two men at 10.30 pm on Wednesday October 26 near the junction of Lawn Mill Road.
After being held for 24 hours, the Hucknall man has now been released on police bail pending further inquiries.
Officers have renewed an appeal for help from the public to boost their investigation.
They want witnesses or anyone with information to come forward, particularly if they can help trace the second suspect allegedly involved in the attack.
He is described as black, muscular and aged about 19. He was wearing a bandana but had a blond streak in his hair.
Detectives are also keen to speak to a young white man, aged approximately 15. They believe he chased the attackers off after disturbing them.
An appeal has also been launched to trace a young couple in a car who are thought to have stopped and looked towards the girl around the time of her ordeal.
Det Insp Rob Severn, who is leading the investigation, explained that the girl, who is from Ilkeston, had gone to Kimberley with a friend. They were on the way to meet other friends but became separated.
He said the girl was left wandering around an unfamiliar area. Her parents “were concerned for her and making enquiries to try and get her back home”.
Det Insp Severn said there was no information suggesting the girl knew her attackers.
After the offence was reported, the path on Maws Lane was cordoned off, and forensic tests were carried out by scenes-of-crime officers.
CCTV footage has been checked and nearby residents questioned as part of house-to-house inquiries. News of the sex-attack spread via the social-networking site, Facebook.
Households near the scene were left shocked.
A mum-of-four said: “I can’t believe this has happened right on our doorstep. It’s a nice area and I like living here but I wouldn’t let my children out at that time of night.”
Anyone with information is asked to ring the police on 0300 3009999 or call the free and confidential Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555111.
