A HUCKNALL dad who braved a parachute jump — despite a crippling fear of heights — has raised £1,652 for Cancer Research UK.

Garry Elsom (37), pictured, of Burberry Avenue, leapt from an aircraft at RAF Langar, near Radcliffe-on-Trent.

He originally aimed to pass the £1,000 mark in sponsorship but smashed his target.

Although he was delighted with his achievement, he described the jump as “horrendous”.

“I was up all night the night before the jump,” said the dad-of-two. “I was playing all sorts of mind games with myself.

“It is not something I would do again. I landed like a stone and drew blood!”

Garry decided to tackle the jump in aid of the charity because his grandfather and two of his uncles hae died from cancer in the last 16 years. He paid for the jump so that every penny of sponsorship cash will go to the charity.
