Nottinghamshire’s 23 gritting vehicles were on the roads from just after 7am on Thursday, completing a run on all main routes by noon with another from 12.30-4pm.

On Thursday night, the teams were out from 6.20pm - completing all main routes by 9.45pm - followed by a run on secondary snow routes until half past midnight.

A second run on main routes took place between midnight and 4.50am, with a third run beginning at 7am on Friday morning throughout the rush hour and beyond.

In addition, salting of footways and severe weather routes, particularly in the Gedling area, took place throughout the day, and slush ploughs were fitted to vehicles in the Ashfield and Rushcliffe areas.

Gritting teams are set to take to the roads again tonight between 6-7pm when all main routes will be salted, followed by runs on snow routes. Standby drivers have been put on alert for tomorrow morning when icy conditions are expected, thanks to overnight temperatures dropping below freezing.

Weather for the next few days is expected to be cold with occasional wintry showers.

Nottinghamshire County Council is advising people to play their part in keeping the county on the move by following the Government’s Snow Code which gives clear advice on clearing snow and ice safely.

If people are fit and able they should clear residential streets and pavements near to their home if possible and check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours to see if they are well and have access to food and drink.

People are also being advised to allow extra time to clear their cars of snow and to drive carefully during the wintry conditions.
