A COMMUNITY initiative has lit the way towards better road safety for young cyclists in Hucknall.

For a joint venture by the Safer Neighbourhood Committees (SNCs) of North and Central wards saw bike lights given out for free to local children.

Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Louise Higgins also took part at the Hucknall Young People’s Centre (formerly the Interchange) on the site of Hucknall Leisure Centre.

Coun Mick Murphy (Con), a Hucknall member of Notts County Council, donated £300 towards the project from a fund he is given to spend for the benefit of the local community.

There was also support from Ashfield District Council.

In total, 27 sets of lights were given out.

PCSO Higgins said: “It was a good evening and it is all about keeping children safe on their bikes now the dark nights are here.”
