THE BULWELL branch of Wilkinson is spreading its wings by helping schoolchildren protect native species of wild birds in the Dispatch district.

The store on Main Street has backed an initiative run by famous birdwatcher and TV personality Bill Oddie aimed at encouraging schoolchildren to look after our feathered friends.

To boost the campaign, Wilkinson has donated a deluxe birdfeeder and a selection of Oddie’s bird-food recipes to Stanstead Primary School on the outskirts of the Dispatch district at Rise Park.

Pupils have also been challenged to collect data on the number of wild birds that their school is already attracting and compare this to figures after using the recipes. They will be helped in their birdwatching by a comprehensive guide also donated as part of the package.

A survey commissioned by Wilkinson found that only 26% of adults in the UK feed the birds in their gardens. So the company decided it was time to educate younger generations on the importance of feeding birds.
