Magistrates have been told how a young, homeless Mansfield man stole clothes to keep warm.

Jamie Roberts (22), of Rosemary Street, was detained and searched by staff at Store 21 on 6th December and found to have stolen boxer shorts, a hat and a pair of gloves to the value of £16.97.

Nicola Thorpe, defending, said Roberts, who admitted theft, had taken up crime again after splitting up with his girlfriend.

She added: “At the time of the offence he had been living on the streets and had his sleeping bag stolen. He is sorry for the offence.”

A probation officer described Roberts as a vulnerable young man who had lived in foster care. He was fined £50 and ordered to pay costs of £50 and a surcharge of £20.
