The position of police commissioner should be non-political

ON Thursday November 15, there will be an election for the role of police and crime commissioner for Nottinghamshire.

The Green Party has not put forward a candidate. This is because we believe that the creation of this role is an error of judgement by the coalition.

It is bad for the police, bad for the community and bad for democracy.

The British police should be non-political. To put the control of the police into the hands of a single politician from a single political party, possibly elected from a very small turnout, creates enormous and obvious risks.

We think it important that people do exercise their right to cast their vote.

We believe that the role, if there must be one, is best filled by an independent candidate or person of independent mind who is committed to representing the wisdom, knowledge and experience of senior police officers.
