Driving champ who hasn't even passed his test!
A 17-YEAR-old racer from Hucknall has become the Nottingham Autograss Club champion at his first attempt – even before he has passed his driving test!
John Boaden has been taking part in autograss (or grass-track) racing, which involves specially-made cars on off-road oval tracks, since the age of 12.
And his success represents a dramatic step-up to the senior section after four successful years at junior level.
Driving his 1,000cc Mini Clubman, John, of Perlethorpe Drive, won more races than any other driver in the ten different classes at the club during the March-to-November season to become overall champion with 242 points.
John, a former pupil of Hucknall's Holgate Comprehensive School, received his trophies at a presentation night at Hucknall Town FC's Talk Of The Town social club on Saturday January 17.
His dad, Steve (45), with whom he built his car from scratch, said: "We are so proud of John. It is such a fantastic achievement to win the overall club championship at his first attempt.
"He has only had four proper driving lessons!"
John has been into cars since he was about four and his dream is to become a professional rally-driver.
But for now, John, who works as a trainee mechanic in Awsworth, will concentrate on defending his club crown.
He will be handed the Southwell-based club's number one jersey for next season and dad Steve said: "We are looking forward to next season and John wearing the number one. It means that everyone will know who he is and everyone will want to beat him."
John's races are real family events because as well as his dad, he is supported by his mum, Stella (42), 19-year-old sister Laura and his 82-year-old grandma Betty Boaden.
