Having gone three games without a win, AFC Emley would have been pleased to see Teversal away next on the fixture list as they appear to have a voodoo on the Tevie Boys.
Emley had won their last four visits to Carnarvon Street and went on to extend that impressive run to five after notching up a 2-1 win.
The Teversal Boys have been a little hit and miss so it made for an intriguing game that wasn’t to disappoint.
The entertainment started right from the off and, after only three minutes, Teversal thought they had taken the lead when Tobin played a ball over the advancing defence with Sykes attempted headed clearance falling to Dave Cockerill who carried the ball on before firing home.
But the joy was short lived as the Assistant Referee had his flag waving to indicate offside for it appears to be Oli Wood as Cockerill clearly came from an onside position.
Emley rubbed salt in the Tevie wounds when Wild gave the referee no option but to award a free kick some 20 yards from goal when he fouled Emley’s Alex Hallam.
Liam Schofield stepped up to produce a Beckham style free kick that was placed up and over the wall and into the top corner to make it 1-0 after just nine minutes.
Teversal had an identical effort a minute later but Colin Cockerill couldn’t match the accuracy of the Emley goal scorer with his powerfully struck effort smashing against the defensive wall.
It was the home side who had the better of the possession, but Emley looked more threatening in front of goal and had they been more clinical could have increased their lead.
An effort on 15 minutes saw Townend do superb down the right flank before picking out Hallam who had the time to control the ball before mis-hitting the effort that still looped over everyone to hit the bar.
With the half drifting into the last five minutes Schofield picked up an Eli Mitchell clearance and produced another excellent strike from 30 yards that left Brooks in the Teversal goal stranded, but the bar came to the rescue again with the rebound going to safety.
The second half continued to be entertaining in the same vein as the first, with both sides producing some good football.
Teversal werepushing hard for the equaliser and saw a quick free-kick from Colin Cockerill in his own half finding his brother Dave who superbly controlled the ball and lifted the ball over the advancing Lawlor but unfortunately for the home side it didn’t drop the right side of the net and ended up nestling on the roof of the net.
On 75 minutes the home side deservedly pulled level when Mark Robinson showed pace determination and pure skill to create some space down the left before crossing to the near post where Dave Cockerill managed to bundle the ball home to make it 1-1 whilst under pressure from Sykes and Lawlor.
The visitors still maintained a threat and looked more of a concern to the host as they were happy to hit them on the break.
This approach turned out to be the manner that Emley were to snatch the win when a move down the left flank saw a cross that was out of the reach of the home defence and allowed Todd to score on his debut from close range with 15 minutes remaining.
Even though the Tevie Boys put in a valiant effort to pinch a point their efforts deserved, both Sykes and Jerome remained solid at the heart of the Emley defence to earn the three points and their amazing run of wins at Carnarvon Street continues.
