A nip-and-tuck match on a wet and windy afternoon failed to go the way of HUCKNALL ROLLS LEISURE RESERVES in the quarter-finals of the Notts Senior League’s Junior Cup.
Rolls were hoping to join local-derby rivals and cup holders, Linby Colliery Welfare Reserves, in the semis when they travelled to meet Kimberley Miners Welfare Reserves, who sit just above them in the First Division table.
But a cagey tie was settled by a single goal in the 70th minute when Kimberley midfielder Scott Carlile was allowed to run unchallenged for 20 yards before coolly finishing under onrushing ‘keeper Jake Pearson.
It was rough justice on Rolls, who were on the front foot for large chunks of the game, especially in the first half, although neither side fashioned many clearcut chances. Defeat was particularly harsh on Rolls’s man-of-the-match Jake ‘The Spartan’ Wright, who controlled the tempo in the middle of the park, mixing a clever range of passing with Cruyff-like turns galore.
