Not content with hitting the top three of the league, HUCKNALL ROLLS LEISURE are now overflowing with cup cheer too.

Rolls reached the Third Round (last 16) of the Notts FA Senior County Cup last Saturday (SEE BACK PAGE). And on Tuesday night, they began their Central Midlands League Cup campaign with a 5-3 victory over Ollerton Town in an entertaining match that not only featured eight goals but also two red cards and two penalties.

Jez Corthorn and Jonathan ‘Toddy’ Wass’s troops came up against one of their old Notts Senior League allies, Wollaton, in the county cup. But a couple of goals from their new ‘Jack Attack’ striking partnership of Jack Smith and Jack Allen clinched a 2-1 victory.

Man-of-the-match Smith, who mixed pace and power throughout the tie, struck first after a scrappy opening 20 minutes. Picking the ball up on the halfway-line, he rolled his marker and drove forward before smashing his shot across the ‘keeper from the edge of the box for a sublime finish.

Smith also started the move that led to the second goal, feeding Rory Smith, who cut back from wide left and curled in a delicious right-foot cross that was just asking to be headed home. Allen duly obliged with a salmon-like leap.

Wollaton got themselves back into the game only two minutes later when Rolls carelessly conceded possession and the ball found its way to visiting captain Adam Campobell, who drove into the roof of the net.

The goal gave Wollaton some momentum and set up a competitive second half on a mudbath of a pitch. At one end, more chances fell to Jack Smith, including a cheeky lob that dropped just wide. But at the other end, Rolls had to defend brilliantly.

Conditions were difficult again on Tuesday when Rolls recovered from going one down in the 15th minute. Jack James burst through to level and goals from Chay Bettridge and Jack Smith, who converted a penalty, made it 3-1 before Ollerton had a player sent off.

In the second period, Bettridge struck again, but instead of seeing the tie out, Rolls became sloppy, and hard-working Ollerton pulled two back.

Patrick McBean finally sealed things with his first goal for the club. But even then, Rolls had to withstand a scare as defender Aaron Short was dismissed for giving away a penalty that was superbly saved by Jack Walker.
