Pride of place in the Second Round (last 16) of the NOTTS FA SUNDAY SENIOR COUNTY CUP went to Hucknall underdogs GREEN DRAGON.
For Dragon pulled off their first win of the season by upsetting last season’s Notts Sunday Morning League (NSML), Premier Premier Division runners-up and Premier Section Cup winners, Nuthall.
Norma Hatfield’s side had lost all four of their opening Premier Premier games but posted a 2-1 victory to avenge a defeat by the same side in this cup competition last term.
Dragon raced into a two-goal lead by the break as striker Danny Taylor bundled home a cross from the right by Jonny Bernard and then a pearler of a corner by Kane Matthews went straight into the net.
Nuthall hit back in the second half and pulled a goal back with a well-taken header from Tyrone Burton. But Dragon’s defence, backed by man-of-the-match ‘keeper Jamie Taylor, stood firm.
DRAGON LINE-UP (3-1-5-1) -- Taylor J./ Gorewoda, Sisson, Smith/ Bernard J./ Curtis, Matthews J., Matthews K., Fletcher, Lewis/ Taylor D. Subs: Crowson, Clarke, Kirk.
A hat-trick by Andy Start enabled T8’S to join Dragon in the quarter-finals as they ended the unbeaten start to the season by Old Colonial.
T8’s could field only a scratch eleven, but thumped their NSML, Premier Premier Division rivals 4-0 to set themselves up nicely for their opening match in the FA All-England Sunday Cup this weekend.
Reece Jackson’s side travel to Leicestershire to take on Wymeswold.
Start had Colonial on the ropes from the tenth minute when he pounced on a rebound to tap home right-footed. And five minutes later, the home centre-half sliced a long kick by goalkeeper Jake Pearson into his own net.
Pearson did have to make a superb save, but T8’s took control and wrapped up the tie with two more Start goals in the last 15 minutes. First he found space in the six-yard box to slide home and then he headed home from close range.
T8’S LINE-UP -- Pearson J./ Conn, Brooks, Peberday, Short, Mann, Jackson R., Murray, Ward, Start A., Edwards.
An agonising penalty-shootout prevented STATION HOTEL making it a Hucknall hat-trick in the county cup as they went down to Trowsers.
The all-NSML Premier Premier Division clash finished 2-2 at the end of extra-time after two equalising goals from Station’s Nathan Lovett. But Trowsers, whose scorers in 90 minutes had been Nick O’Dowd and Courtney Bartley, won the shootout 4-3.
Penalties were also needed to settle the only match in the Second Round (last 16) of the NOTTS FA SUNDAY INTERMEDIATE COUNTY CUP involving a Dispatch district team.
In a ding-dong tie against AFC Nottingham, of the Notts Sunday Combination, THE EMPIRE led 2-0, trailed 4-2 and led 5-4 in extra-time before missing their last spot-kick to lose the shootout 5-4.
Joe Ashurst bagged a hat-trick for the Hucknall team, with Grant Ryan netting the other two goals. Tom Fleetham scored four for the home side, with Sam Malcolm hitting the last equaliser in the 115th minute.
