You’ve got to be some team to have wrapped up a league title by the first week in March. So take a bow, Bulwell outfit EMPIRE, the new kings of the NOTTS SUNDAY COMBINATION.
The Combination’s Premier Division programme has been decimated by defections, reducing the number of sides to just eight.
But that’s no fault of Empire, who sealed the championship by licking Sycamore St Ann’s 6-0 in their final fixture last weekend.
Two goals apiece for Marcus Newman and Robbie England, plus one each from Jamie Carter and Conor Carter, did the trick for the visitors, who have won 11 and lost just two of their 14 matches.
Empire could be joined in the top flight next term by Hucknall side AFC ROLLS-ROYCE, who stepped up their promotion bid in the First Division with an 11-0 rout of bottom-of-the-table Gedling Southbank.
For the second week running, Joe Maguire helped himself to a hat-trick, scoring four of the goals, as Rolls showed no mercy to a side that have lost all 15 of their games, leaking 97 goals.
Gareth Wainwright also netted three, while Dom Masotano scored two and Mitchell Duffin and Josh Broad one apiece.
IN the NOTTS SUNDAY MORNING LEAGUE, a recent spell of promising form by THE NABB INN came to an end in Senior Division Two.
Nabb slid to a disappointing 2-0 defeat away to Bridgford Taverners, who are below them in the table. Steve Enderby and Sam Thomas bagged the goals.
However, the championship charge of BESTWOOD MINERS WELFARE continued with a 6-1 romp at home to Bilborough Rangers in Senior Division Three.
Bestwood have been docked a couple of wins because of teams leaving the league, but they still hold all the aces in the title race thanks to an eight-match 100% record.
Their scorers against Bilborough were Adam Price-Henderson (2), Reece Knight (2), Greg Mitchell and Tremayne Bryan.
Bestwood are now poised to tame Trent Bridgford Tigers in their next game.
