Extra-time was needed to split two Hucknall teams in an entertaining local derby for a place in the quarter-finals of the Notts Sunday Morning League’s Premier Section Cup.
BARFLYS H20, who were relegated from the top flight last season, took on HUCKNALL TOWN SUNDAY, currently the highest-ranked Dispatch district team in the Premier Division.
A surprise seemed on the cards when Ben Samuels gave Barflys the lead. But the smooth inter-passing of Town began to pay dividends and led to Ellliott Christie rounding the ‘keeper to equalise and force the extra half-hour.
The tie could have gone either way, but Dean Longdon fired a free-kick into the top corner for the visitors, and as Barflys pushed men forward, they were caught on the counter when Dan Draycott broke to drive against a post and tap home the rebound to complete a 3-1 victory.
The result meant Town will be Hucknall’s only representatives in the last eight. THE EMPIRE also bowed out, losing 2-1 to fellow First Division outfit, Premium, despite a goal from Willy Spray. John Greaves struck for the home team either side of half-time.
IT WAS a different story in the Senior Section Cup, where all three local teams made it through to the Third Round, including BESTWOOD MINERS WELFARE and THE NABB INN.
Bestwood were handed a walkover because opponents, Borussia TNF, could not raise eleven. While Nabb enjoyed a resounding 5-2 win at home to divisional rivals, Dovecrest. Both Shane Brown and Gareth Wainwright helped themselves to doubles, while the consistent Nick Clayton was also on the mark.
THE week’s only league match involving a Hucknall team saw ATHLETICO T8’S go down 4-1 at home to Edwalton in Premier Division One. Ryan Orton did cancel out the visitors’ early opener, but Athletico conceded a penalty ten minutes from time and then leaked two more goals as heads dropped.
