Brave AFC DOWHAN became the first team this season to take a point off leaders Strelley in the Senior Third Division of the Notts Sunday Morning League.
But they were still kicking themselves with regret because they threw away a 2-0 lead with only ten minutes to go to draw 2-2.
Linby Colliery Welfare striker Matt Murphy had given Dowhan the lead on his debut, turning the ball home at the near post after a fine run and cross down the right by Damo Balandowits. And when Nick David doubled the lead in the 70th minute, they looked sure to go on and win, especially with their defenders in such commanding form -- no-one more so than man-of-the-match Tom Coupe, who threw himself into every tackle and every header.
However, never-say-die Strelley, who had plundered 43 goals in their opening eight victories, finally broke through in a cruel finale for newly-formed Dowhan.
A sloppy goal, scored by Matt Gibosn, gave the visitors hope and then a deflected effort from Dan Hardy rescued them a point at the death.
It was the second time inside a month that the Hucknall outfit had proved they can live with the division’s best.
