Victory in their final match of the season tomorrow (Saturday) could yet earn HUCKNALL ROLLS LEISURE the runners-up spot in the Notts Senior League’s Senior Division.
Rolls dropped two more points when held to a 2-2 draw at home to Wollaton last Saturday.
But their closest rivals for second place, Attenborough, are in the middle of a poor run of form that means their two games in hand might not help them overhaul Jez Corthorn’s outfit.
The Rollers’ last fixture is against Magdala Amateurs when they will be hoping to erase the inonsistencies that plagued their efforts against Wollaton.
Boosted by the return of several key players, they eased into a two-goal lead, only to throw it away in the last half-hour.
Matt Rick gave them a 15th minute lead, nipping in to guide the ball into the far corner after Greg Conn had touched on a right-wing throw.
The rest of the first half was typical end-of-season fare, but Rolls appeared to have made the game safe in the 61st minute when Jack Allen cut in from the right to unleash a thunderous left-foot drive into the top corner.
Unfortunately, the goal seemed to wake an ageing Wollaton side, who pulled one back almost immediately when Tom Cooper was allowed to stroll through unchallenged to slot past ‘keeper Jake Pearson.
The equaliser came on 75 as Luke Humphreys stole in at the far post to nod home. But Rolls were denied a late penalty by referee Colin White when Allen seemed to be felled.
ROLLS LINE-UP (4-4-2): Pearson/ Conn, Short, Duncan, Tolley./ Smith, Brooks, James, Bainbridge/ Rick, Allen J. Subs: Tring (for Brooks 65), Woodigns (for Smith 75), Matthews K. (for Bainbridge 75).
