An engrossing match in the Easter Monday sunshine saw LINBY COLLIERY WELFARE slide to an undeserved 2-0 defeat at home to Belper United in the Central Midlands League’s South Division.

Fourth-placed Belper executed the perfect away performance, topped by second-half goals from Sam Vickers, who let rip with a superb 25-yard free-kick into the top corner on 50 minutes, and from substitute James Dennis, who delivered an 89th minute sucker punch when robbing goalkeeper Luca Rocco.

But Linby produced a fine performance, enjoying most of the possession and forcing no fewer than 15 corners to Belper’s two.

From one of their flagkicks, a flying header by Tom Coupe brought a brilliant save by Scott Whittingham. And as they laid siege on the visitors’ goal in the second period, Kyle McDermott’s looping header grazed the bar before more terrific saves by Whittingham.
