Never-say-die LINBY COLLIERY WELFARE RESERVES celebrated news of a plum tie in the quarter-finals of the county cup by staging a bold fightback in their latest league game.
Linby will be at home to Awsworth Villa’s first-team in their debut appearance in the last eight of the Notts FA Intermediate Cup on Saturday 11th January.
And they showed some of the spirit that will be needed that day when recovering from 2-0 down at half-time to prise a 3-3 draw out of Bingham Town in the Notts Senior League’s First Division.
It looked as if the absence of six key players would take its toll on Jamie Wheatley’s Linby side. But two more goals from top scorer Reece Jackson, boosting his tally for the season to 22, and Ross Cheeseman gave them a 3-2 lead -- until Bingham saved the day three minutes from the end. The visitors’ scorers were Jack Horton, George Abbott and Jevon Patrick.
LINBY RESERVES LINE-UP (4-4-2) -- Guyatt/ Bernard J., O’Neill, Buckley, Paterson D./ Wallis, Ryan (man-of-match), Murray, Miller/ Jackson R., Cheeseman. Subs: Parkin L. (for Wallis 77), Bernard D. (for Cheeseman 87).
IN the same division, HUCKNALL ROLLS LEISURE RESERVES were delighted with a fine 3-0 win at Wollaton Reserves considering their squad was reduced to bare bones.
Rolls could name only 11 players for the trip. But they started brightly and opened the scoring in the 20th minute through striker Matt Rick.
As lowly Wollaton tried to fight back, they found the visiting defence difficult to break down. And against the run of play, Rolls doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when young Connor Whiles tapped home from close range.
In the second half, Gibson’s troops were happy to defend their lead before Adam Brown sealed the points, heading home from a set-piece.
There were plenty of positive performances, especially from the youngsters, but Jamie Thomas shaded the man-of-the-match award in the centre of the park.
ROLLS RESERVES LINE-UP -- Edwards/ Lindon, Lamb, Brooks, Dove, Whiles C., Hayes G., Thomas J., Brown A.,Rick, Woodings.
