Stand-in goalkeeper Ben Smith saved TWO penalties, but still conceded six goals as the rocky start to the season by one of Hucknall’s top Sunday sides, HALF MOON, continued.

Moon crashed 6-1 at home to West Bridgford-based Old Colonial in the Notts Sunday Morning League’s Premier Premier Division, despite a man-of-the-match display by Smith, standing in for Jamie Taylor. His spot-kick stops came either side of half-time, but Colonial were already 4-1 up and added a successful penalty before the end.

Earlier Smith had been beaten by a couple of freak goals. First, when a Colonial corner was cleared off the line, the ball flew into the net off the unwitting head of visiting striker Scott Litchfield. And then, moments later, a long-range backpass by defender Rob Neale caught the wind and sailed over Smith’s head. Moon responded when Danny Taylor calmly slotted a shot under the ‘keeper.

Despite the defeat, Moon manageress Norma Hatfield remained optimistic and said: “We are still playing some constructive football. Hopefully, it will bear fruit over the next couple of weeks.”
