An inspired performance by Luke Price engineered a stirring fightback by LINBY COLLIERY WELFARE RESERVES in the Notts Senior League’s First Division
Having been knocked out of the Notts FA Intermediate County Cup by Awsworth Villa the previous week, Linby faced the same club’s reserve-team on their return to league action.
And they appeared to be heading for a similar setback as they trailed 3-1 at half-time.
But whatever managers Jamie Wheatley and Jay Parkin said furing the break worked wonders because Linby recovered to win 4-3 in a thriller, with Price involved in all the goals.
Price started the revival in the 50th minute when slamming home after a shot by first-team striker Matt Murphy had been saved by Awsworth goalkeeper Liam Bradley.
Three minutes later, the scores were level when Price returned the favour, crossing for Murphy, who turned to fire in the bottom corner.
And after Ross Cheeseman had fizzed a shot against a post, Linby conjured up the winner six minutes from the end when a long ball found man-of-the-match Price, who crossed to the far post where substitute Alistair Murray headed home.
Price should even have added a fifth goal, and completed a hat-trick, in the 88th minute when he was fouled for a penalty. But his kick was saved by Bradley, who also stopped Jonny Bernard’s rebound effort.
The action-packed match had started with 25 minutes of Linby pressure that led to a breakthrough goal set up by Aaron Ryan. The midfielder’s lovely through-ball found Price, who unveiled a terrific touch and finish.
However, in ten crazy minutes of madness, the home side then went into meltdown, conceding three goals.
Former Hucknall Rolls Leisure man Matt James volleyed a superb equaliser from fully 35 yards. The lively Luke Davies sped clear to convert a one-on-one. And Ben Watson was unmarked at the far post to net.

A LATE goal by man-of-the-match Jamie ‘Midge’ Thomas rescued a point for HUCKNALL ROLLS LEISURE RESERVES away to high-riding Southwell City Reserves in the Notts Senior League’s First Division.
Rolls looked to be heading for a 1-0 defeat after a hard-fought match against an organised Southwell outfit.
But two minutes from the end, a challenge in the area by substitute Adam Brown threw up a loose ball that midfielder Thomas reacted quickest to and finished from six yards.
Southwell’s goal had come in the 15th minute when Danny Garratt cut in from the left flank and drove home a fine, angled strike.
It was just reward for a bright start from the home team in which they created numerous chances.
But Rolls soon settled down to play some decent football on a difficult surface and they should have levelled on the half-hour when Rory Smith raced clear for a chip that fell the wrong side of the post.
Although the impressive Garratt was always a threat, the Hucknall side continued to keep the ball for long periods in the second half.
