HOLDERS Empire A look determined to hold on to the Knockout Cup they won last season in the HUCKNALL EPA POOL LEAGUE.
For in a repeat of the 2011 final, they defeated league champions Spot-On Low-C 4-2 to march into the semis of this season’s competition.
Other quarter-final ties saw the two Royal British Legion teams and also Liberal Club progress into the last four.
Legion A, who are the current unbeaten league leaders, disposed of third-placed Empire Muppets 4-2, while Legion B defeated Bestwood Village Social Club 4-2 and Liberal hammered Yew Tree 4-0.
The draw for the semi-finals, which take place on Wednesday March 14, has pitted Legion A against Liberal in a tie to be played at the Chequers Inn, and Empire A against Legion B in a tie to be played at the Liberal Club.
Meanwhile the quarter-finals of the consolation tournament, the Mellors Bicknell Shield, for teams beaten in the opening round of the Knockout Cup itself, were also played last week.
Chequers Inn A were handed a bye but Chequers B beat Sherwood Ranger 4-3, Harrier defeated Station Hotel (Hucknall) B 4-2 and Green Dragon enjoyed a walkover against Seven Stars.
Bottom-of-the-table Stars have disbanded after the pub closed. But the league has ruled that all their results in the first half of the season will stand. Stars had only one team, Yew Tree, still to play and they have been awarded a win.
The draw for the semi-finals of the Mellors Bicknell is Harrier v Chequers Inn A at the Station Hotel (Hucknall) and Green Dragon v Chequers Inn B at the Spot-On Club. Ties will also take place on Wednesday March 14.
League action resumed this week, while on Sunday, the First Round (January 15) of the singles championship takes place at various venues.
