Big guns in winning start

REIGNING champions Royal British Legion A might not have been in action, but there was no shortage of eyecatching performance as the HUCKNALL EPA POOL LEAGUE’S new season got under way.

To the fore were Empire A, runners-up from last term, and Spot-On Low C, who won the title in 2010/11 and came in third last season.

In fact, both were forced to dig deep to secure opening-round 5-3 victories.

For Spot, they had to rely on a win on the penultimate leg and an eight-ball clearance from Ryan Norris on the final frame to see off a spirited Yew Tree for whom Karl Jones also produced an eight-ball effort.

As for Empire, they were pegged back to 3-3 after being 3-0 up before Craig Johnstone and Ashley Dobb reeled off the last two legs.

Royal British Legion B were in fine form as they trounced Liberal Club 7-1 on their own table with Martin Harper winning on singles and pairs.

Flying Bedstead were their own worst enemies as they failed to provide a player for the last frame and gave up the chance of nicking a point as they went down 5-3 against Chequers.

In a match cut short by neither side having a full line-up of players, Little John were still far too strong for Spot-On Bulwell as they came through 6-1.

Elsewhere, Bestwood Village Social Club came back from 3-2 down to slay Green Dragon 5-3, while The Dragon and Station Hotel (Hucknall) B fought out a 4-4 draw with Dragon taking the last frame in the hands of Jason Bond to secure their point.
