Bowls star rubs shoulders with best in the world

THE AMAZING bowls career of Hucknall veteran Dave Adams reached a new pinnacle last weekend when he rubbed shoulders with the best players in the world.

For Adams (67), of Kersall Gardens, was part of the Nottinghamshire-based team that won the Potters Holidays Champion Of Champions event.

And the final was played in front of BBC TV cameras at the Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines World Indoor Bowls Championships, staged at the Potters holiday resort at Hopton-on-Sea, near Great Yarmouth.

Remarkably, the honour was the 75th major bowls title that the prolific Adams has won since he took up the sport 27 years ago after he had to retire from playing football.

The prestigious competition runs across the country throughout the 32-week indoor bowls season.

“The tournament is contested by 3,000 teams, which equates to 12,000 bowlers, so it takes some winning,” explained Adams.

“We won every game we played — 17 in all.”

The top 32 teams and 32 runners-up qualified for the finals in December. And from there, the final two were whittled down to take each other on before the semi-finals of the world singles title at Potters last Saturday.

Alongside Adams, who was skip, were fellow Nottinghamshire county teammates Bob Rose, at lead, Dave Haslam, at two, and Ray Maskell, at three. They beat a team from County Durham 11-3.
