DARTS: ‘Phenomenal’ Notts push for the title
A SUPERB victory in their latest home match at Hucknall propelled the Nottinghamshire county darts team to the top of the table in the British Inter-Counties Championship.
Notts, who are based at the Rolls-Royce Leisure Club on Watnall Road, beat Northamptonshire 24-12 in a performance described by spokesman Mike Robinson as “phenomenal”.
The win lifted them from third place to first in the Second Division table, just ahead of Lincolnshire, Staffordshire and Hertfordshire in a thrilling race for the two promotion slots.
Now Notts have four games remaining this season to clinch the title and a place in Division One. They travel to Hertfordshire on the weekend of February 11 and 12, entertain Suffolk on March 3 and 4, visit Lincolnshire on March 31 and April 1 and play host to Middlesex in the final set of fixtures on April 28 and 29.
Against Northants, the locals started the ball rolling with a 4-2 win for the ladies’ B team, whose star was Julie Pipe with an average of 17.28.
The men’s B team battled their way to a 6-6 draw, with Brian Kirk topping the averages on 31.31, and then came a second day to remember as the two A teams hit top form.
The ladies triumphed 5-1, thanks largely to stellar efforts from Helen Harvey, Sara Faulkner and Nicola McNamara. And the men raised the bar even higher with a 9-3 victory that featured outstanding averages of 34.16 from man-of--the-match Mick Pitchford and 30.06 from Paul Harvey.
In the league’s separate team-tables, Notts sit top of the men’s A table, third in the ladies’ A, fourth in the men’s B and third in the ladies’ B table.
