Jeffries back to help Bulwell Soar

A NEAR full-strength Bulwell brushed aside divisional rivals Selston 5-1 to canter into the quarter-finals of the Notts Senior League’s (NSL) Senior Cup.

Top scorer Allan Jeffries made a welcome return from injury and bagged a brace, but the star of the show for The Bulls was skipper and central defender Dwayne Soar.

What’s more, he and central-defensive partner Jay Knight had to be at their best as Selston started the game brightly. Knight made one telling tackle with a striker preparing to pull the trigger from six yards.

Finally Bulwell settled into their rhythm and opened their account on 33 minutes when Carl Horder beat three men and his shot was parried into the path of John Manders.

The locals added a second soon after the break with Connor Carter chipping over the ‘keeper from an acute angle to make amends for two first-half misses.

It was then game over with two goals in the space of five minutes as Jeffries neatly sidefooted home a Carter cross on 70 and Knight headed in another Carter centre on 75.

Selston did bag a consolation on 81 minutes when substitute Curran chipped ‘keeper James Wheat from 20 yards but The Bulls response was to add their fifth as Jeffries, who came through unscathed, volleyed in a cross from substitute Stuart Gretton.

BULWELL LINE-UP -—Wheat/ Ward, Walker, Knight, Soar D., Keetley, Horder, Moore, Manders, Carter C., Jeffries. Subs: Carter J. (for Keetley), England (for Manders), Gretton (for Ward).

HOLDERS BOOTS ATHLETIC relinquished their grip on the NSL Senior Cup in a 4-2 extra-time defeat against Sandhurst in the Second Round.

The Chemists, of Division One, who play at Rolls-Royce in Hucknall, held their higher-ranked Senior Division opponents to 2-2 in normal time with goals from Michael Brown and Neil Hamed.

But the home side proved too strong with goals from Cameron (2), Beavis and Summers.
