Late double seals rare Linby loss
LINBY Colliery Welfare slipped to their first home defeat of the season to an impressive Clifton All Whites team in the Central Midlands League South Division on Saturday..
But for good defending and three excellent saves from fit again keeper Jack Harvey, an unusually subdued Linby could easily have trailed at the break.
Matters worsened for Linby when skipper Mark Jago limped out of the action, and then at half-time they lost the influential Ash Winfield to injury.
But suddenly they sprung to life and took the lead on 48 minutes.
Jonty Bradshaw and Dave Marlow did well down the right, and when Marlow’s cross was misjudged by Joe Parlatt, the Clifton keeper, Simon Marlow was first to the ball and fed it back to man-of-the-match Kyle McDermott who executed a superb chip over the stranded keeper and defenders and into the far corner.
But the visitors were soon level on 56 minutes through a Thompson free-kick.
Chances followed at both ends, Matt Murphy forcing an excellent save from Parlatt and Clifton’s Miller blazing a one-on-one over the bar.
McDermott saw an effort cleared off the line and another tipped over by Parlatt, and from the corner Martin Burke’s header was cleared off the line as well.
It was two counter-attacks that won Clifton the game in the last four minutes, Chris Atkins picking out Jake Richardson to make it 2-1 and after Simon Marlow had volleyed inches wide for Linby, the visitors sealed the points when Atkins converted a one-on-one.
