Leading sides give Linby a tough week
LINBY Colliery Welfare endured a tough week with two straight defeats to the leading sides in the Central Midlands League South.
A 6-1 hammering at unbeaten league leaders Newark Town on Wednesday night was preceded by a 3-2 loss against second-placed Bilborough Pelican on Saturday.
Linby started well at Bilborough, John Andrews clearing a free-kick off the line, but within moments they were behind as Phil Hinton cashed in on hesitation in the defence to give the home side the lead with virtually their only attack of the first-half.
Linby then had a penalty appeal turned down when Ash Winfield appeared to be fouled after Damian Mann’s cross, before Simon Marlow saw a 20-yard shot beat the keeper but not a defender on the line.
The equaliser came on the half-hour mark when Matt Peberday’s searching free-kick was turned in at the far post by Matt Ball to make it 1-1.
A quality move then saw Peberday cross for Matt Murphy but his header was cleared off the line.
Linby weren’t to be denied, however, as a great pass from Aaron Ryan picked out Jonty Bradshaw and he turned before planting a fine effort into the top corner to put Welfare in frtont at half-time.
Controversy came in the second minute of the second-half as a lofted pass was played down Linby’s right flank and the flag was raised for offside.
Linby’s defence half stopped, expecting a whistle, and Danny Blanchard put the ball in the net. The referee then consulted his assistant only to overrule him and award the goal to make it 2-2.
Linby were denied another penalty on 55 as Murphy was pushed to the floor but nothing was given, before the visitors were then punished for another mistake as Blanchard gave the home team an unlikely lead on 71 minutes.
Man-of-the-match Ryan then saw a shot blocked on the line after Martyn Burke’s mazy run, Peberday’s free-kick was cleared off the line and Murphy hit the post as an equaliser was sought after in vain.
The late dismissal of Simon Marlow added insult to injury for Welfare, though a Pelican player received a second yellow in the same incident.
Linby: Harvey, Paterson, Ball, Peberday, Coupe, Bradshaw (Burke 61), Ryan, Winfield (Millensted 78), S Marlow, Mann, Murphy.
