Linby are extra-time cup stars

A STAR-studded performance in extra-time finally saw LINBY COLLIERY WELFARE’S name in the hat for the quarter-final draw in the Notts Senior League’s (NSL) Senior Cup.

Despite dominating the match against NSL Senior-Division rivals Ruddington for large periods, Linby found themselves a goal behind with time running out.

But on 84 minutes, joint player-manager Dave Marlow popped up with the equaliser to set up the extra half-hour.

Linby then turned on the afterburners to score three times in the opening half of extra-time to run out worthy 4-1 winners.

Matt Clowes, who was on as a substitute, hit the woodwork for the third time in the match before putting the locals ahead for the first time on 95 minutes after being sent through by man-of-the-match Ashley Winfield.

Six minutes later, Matt Murphy made amends for an earlier miss when finishing a high-quality move that featured at least 25 passes and involved virtually the whole of the team.

The tie was then in the bag as Arron Potter unleashed Clowes for a one-on-one to complete the scoring.

There was still time for Clowes to get a sniff of a hat-trick from the penalty spot after substitute Jonty Bradshaw had been upended. But he fluffed his lines and smashed the ball against the bar.

Earlier, it looked as though Linby would be frustrated again by Ruddington, who have beaten them twice in the league this season after being outclassed on both occasions.

Chances came and disappeared before Dave Rimmington’s corner went in after a melee in the box on 62 minutes to give the visitors the lead.

LINBY LINE-UP (4-4-2) Miles/ Marlow D., Peberday, Jago, Dakers/ Mann, Winfield, Marlow S., Potter/ Hodgson, Murphy. Subs: Bradshaw (for Mann 45), Clowes (for Hodgson 60), Howell (not used), Ball (not used).
