McPhilbin outclassed in title fight

BRAVE Bulwell boxer Shane McPhilbin (pictured) was comprehensively beaten in his bid to win back the British cruiserweight title.

The pride of the Dispatch district, who also trains at the St George amateur club in Hucknall, took the Lonsdale belt with a Rocky-esque comeback to defeat Leon ‘Solid’ Williams in the final stages of their 12-round encounter.

But there was no repeat of the heroics made famous on the silver screen by Sylvester Stallone when McPhilbin stepped through the ropes against Jon Lewis Dickinson at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

For he was heavily beaten on points after 12 one-sided rounds on a televised bill that was shown on the BoxNation channel on Sky TV.

All three judges came out in favour of Dickinson with Richie Davies and Howard Foster both scoring the contest it 110-118, while Phil Edwards had it 111-117.

Before the bout, McPhilbin had been forced to go on a run around Anfield in the famous city after struggling to make the weight.

He went on to put in a disappointing shift on the canvas, even though Dickinson failed to stop him.

Trainer Kevin Sheehan was damning in his verdict, he is reported as saying after the fight: “He has got me baffled. I could tell after the fifth round that he didn’t want it. He was playing about.”

It was something of an anti-climax for McPhilbin, who was back in the ring looking to earn a title he had previously lost controversially against former world champ Enzo Maccarinelli.

The Welshman had taken the belt after a blunder by a timelkeeper cut the first round short by 47 seconds when he was on the back foot.
