The visitors’ decision to bat first backfired as only Jake Libby (59 from 173 balls with five fours) defied a disciplined seam attack, led by Boyd Rankin and Rikki Clarke, for long.

Nottinghamshire resumed after lunch on 71 for two, having lost Steven Mullaney and Michael Lumb, bowled by Clarke and Jeetan Patel respectively, in the morning session.

That became 76 for three when Billy Taylor lifted Keith Barker high to long-leg and 81 for four when Rikki Wessels edged a brute of a ball from Rankin to wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose.

Libby reached a dogged half-century after 178 minutes batting but then, after watching Samit Patel edge Rankin to Ambrose, became the third batsman to perish that way, leaving the Irishman with the deservedly impressive figures of three for 25.
