POOL: Legion resume service at the top

NORMAL service was resumed at the top of the HUCKNALL EPA POOL LEAGUE table as champions-elect Royal British Legion A returned to action after a week on the sidelines.

For the unbeaten tabletoppers recorded a 5-3 win over Chequers A to restore a three-point cushion.

Their main challengers, Empire A, were themselves out of action this week on a blank date.

So the door was opened for club stablemates Empire Muppets to jump into second place, and they didn’t disappoint.

For they secured a 5-3 success at Station Hotel (Hucknall) B after surging into the ascendancy from 2-2 with the help of wins on singles and pairs from Joe Etherington.

Elsewhere there was controversy as Sherwood Ranger were handed a walkover 8-0 win over fellow strugglers Harrier after a mix-up.

The league secretary revealed that Harrier had forgotten that the match had been switched to the tables at Ranger after a fixture re-jig at the start of the season and failed to turn up at the match.

The mistake will come up for discussion at this Sunday’s league meeting.

Reigning champions, Spot-On Low C, who have endured a tough defence of their title, are in fourth place, seven points off the lead, despite coming from 3-0 down to grab a 5-3 win at Bestwood Village Social Club.

The winners for Bestwood were Nick Varley, Michael Bull and the pairing of Horan and Varley. But Spot battled back through Dean Brittain, Simon Thompson, the pairing of Ryan Noris and Brittain, Ben Samson and then Norris again on singles.

In the remaining fixtures of the week, there were 5-3 wins for Liberal and Royal British Legion B over Green Dragon and Yew Tree respectively.

THE INDIVIDUALS’ rankings table continues to be dominated by players from title-challenging Empire with three in the top five.

Top is the side’s Geoff Taylor, who has enjoyed 14 wins from 15 outings. Teammates Rob Roylance and Steve Wood are in fourth and fifth with identical records of 12 wins from 15 games.

In second place is Legion A’s Martin Bremner (13 wins from 14 games) and in third is Shane Wood, of Chequers B (12 wins from 15).
