Rolls ‘keeper hero of cup penalty shootout
ON THE SPOT -- Kyle McDermott, one of the Rolls penalty heroes
HERO goalkeeper Mark Rollson saved three spot-kicks in a penalty shootout to send Rolls-Royce Leisure into the quarter-finals of the Notts Senior League’s Senior Cup.
Rolls have contested the last two finals in the competition but, after 120 minutes, couldn’t be separated from divisional rivals Keyworth United.
That is until Rollson produced an imperious display in the nailbiting finale, while outfield players Andy Start, Greg Conn and Kyle McDermott kept up their end of the bargain to slot home their kicks to secure a 3-0 shootout victory.
The sides both deserve credit for trying to play decent football in tough conditions throughout normal and extra time.
But with a blustery wind blowing across the pitch, chances were hard to come by.
Rolls went close through McDermott and Billy Brooks and should have gone ahead when Duncan Paterson shot wide from eight yards after a corner.
At the other end, Rollson was in great form to deny two one-on-ones before a second half that was virtually a non-event.
In extra time, that man Rollson kept Rolls in it with another one-on-one save before, in the second period of extra time, Andy Start went scampering through but his attempted lob was well saved.
Then, with virtually the last kick of the game, Rolls thought they had won it but right-back Greg Conn’s volley, from a cross by Adam Tolley, was somehow tipped over.
ROLLS LINE-UP — (4-4-2): Rollson/ Conn, Short A., Patterson D., Tolley/ Brookes B., Niblett, Solloman, Poole/ McDermott, Start A. Subs: Murray, Greeley, Buckley, Osbourne.
