Shane McPhilbin to box for British title
BULWELL’S answer to ‘Rocky’, boxer Shane McPhilbin, will bid on Saturday night to correct the record books and win back the prestigious British cruiserweight title.
McPhilbin will step into the ring in Liverpool to tackle Jon-Lewis Dickinson for the vacant Lonsdale belt.
But the background that has led to the bout is one of spectacular highs and tough-to-take lows in the ring for McPhilbin.
He originally grabbed the title with a stunning last-round victory over Leon ‘Solid’ Williams last January after being on the back foot for most of the fight.
He landed a knockout blow at the death to spark elation among his supporters.
It was the Bulwell pugilist’s 11th outing of his career and by far the highlight.
That in turn set up a massive clash with former world champion Enzo Maccarinelli in Birmingham as the Welshman launched a bid to win a first British title.
But that fight was dogged with controversy by an incredible blunder in the first round by the timekeeper, who cut the opening stanza short by 47 seconds.
Maccarinelli had been floored and was in big trouble at the time.
However, the respite allowed him to recover and he went on to win the bout on points after 12 scrappy rounds.
Maccarinelli immediately offered a re-match but that was then scuppered as the holder suffered an injury.
Then Maccarinelli was forced to hang up his gloves for six months after testing positive for a banned substance in the aftermath of the McPhilbin fight.
He said he ‘naively’ took a sports supplement advertised as a fat burner.
He gave up the belt in light of the failed test, apologised to boxing fans and even considered legal action against the publication in which the supplement was advertised.
All this sparked calls from McPhilbin’s manager, Carl Greaves, for the Bulwell man to be reunited with the belt.
But the British Board of Boxing Control knocked back that request and now we find ourselves gearing up for the fight with Dickinson.
McPhilbin says he is “ready to take back” what is rightfully his in a bout that will be televised on the TV channel BoxNation on what is a packed card.
