Swimmer eyes 2016 Olympics

THE EXCITEMENT is mounting as the countdown continues to the Olympic Games in London this summer.

But for one young swimmer from Bulwell, all focus is on the FOLLOWING Olympics, to be held in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil in 2016.

That’s when rising star Kelsie Campbell will be 17 years old. And there’s little doubt that if she fulfils the potential she is showing now, she will be in contention for a place in the British squad.

Kelsie, a pupil at the Nottingham Academy, is one of the brightest prospects in the Nova Centurion Nottinghamshire county team.

Despite her young age, she has delighted her coaches by achieving a high standard in time trials. And her progress is so good that she has qualified to take part in the British Gas National Swimming Championships, which are to be held in the Aquatics Centre at the Olympic Park in London next month. The championships double up as selection trials for the Olympics.

Now Kelsie’s talent has been recognised by the award of a £300 funding boost from Bulwell and Basford Rotary Club.

The club’s president and vice-president, Malcolm Darroch and David Smith, presented the cheque at Beechdale Baths in Nottingham where Kelsie was training alongside British star Rebecca Adlington, of Mansfield, who won two gold medals at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

“Kelsie is a young girl with a bright future, so we are pleased to support her in her efforts to realise her dream to make the British team,” said Malcolm.

Delighted Kelsie thanked the Rotary officials for their help and promised to fly the flag for Bulwell to the best of her ability.
